Did you know that a mussel can only survive above water for about 6 hours? That a mussel can become as old as 18 to 24 years? Or that it takes about two years for a mussel to be big enough before it is suitable for consumption?
The mussel is the symbol of the town of Bruinisse in Zeeland? The big mussel on the harbour platform, but also the many coloured fishing boats in the harbour, are proof of this.
The village, in the very eastern corner of the municipality Schouwen-Duiveland, is situated on the Grevelingenmeer (Lake Grevelingen) and the Krammer, a small salt water lake created after the construction of the Grevelingendam and the Philipsdam, which are part of the world-famous Delta Works. The marina of Bruinisse is one of the gems of the Dutch boating world.
Salty air, sandbanks, land and coastal birds, but also wild horses and roe deer. On the Grevelingen, the best of fresh and salt gets together. Lake Grevelingen, the natural border between Zeeland and Zuid-Holland, is favourite with divers. Because of the stagnant water, the soil particles have descended, so that the water is very clear.
On the west side, the lake is separated from the North Sea by the Brouwersdam, which is part of the Delta Works. The area around the dam is favourite with water sports enthusiasts and is perfect for windsurfing and kiting.
South of Bruinisse, more inland, Schouwen-Duiveland offers a diverse landscape. Here, you can enjoy the fantastic North Sea coast with its broad beaches, near Renesse, or take a long walk through the “Domeinen”, the biggest forest of Zeeland which also has one of the most beautiful mountain bike routes of the country.
Schouwen-Duiveland is perfect for long cycling tours through a landscape that we don’t see much anymore in the Netherlands. The many country roads take you past characteristic villages and offer you safe cycling paths.
Because of a bombardment in the Second World War, several historic buildings in the village were destroyed. Nowadays, the village relies modern activities such as the professional golf course and the bowling centre. With the mussels as its symbol, it is hardly surprising that the only two museums in the village are solely dedicated to this tasty mollusc. The marina is the flagship of the village. South of Bruinisse you will find the “Watersnoodmuseum” (flood disaster museum) in Ouwerkerk.
Bruinisse has a large supermarket, a pharmacy, a bakery, a bike rental shop, and various restaurants.
Also worth a visit are the old Dutch towns Zierikzee, Veere and Middelburg or seaside resorts Renesse and Domburg.
