The best-known building in Ouddorp is probably “Het Blaeuwe Huus” (the Blue House), the present tourist office. You will see it on many postcards and on one of the famous works of artists Rien Poortvliet. But did you know that there used to be several “Blaeuwe Huusjes” in the village? This is because people used to paint the farms in Ouddorp blue as this colour was supposed to be keeping small flies away which were attracted by the cattle of the nearby farms. By painting the houses blue, it was said that the residents would not be bothered by the flies.
Ouddorp is in the north of the island Goeree-Overflakkee, the southernmost part of the province Zuid-Holland. In 2007, Ouddorp was proclaimed ‘best seaside town of the Netherlands’ by national newspaper Algemeen Dagblad. And rightly so, because the village is stretched out over more than 4 kilometres of unique landscape. Goeree-Overflakkee, with a town of the same name, is connected to the island of Schouwen-Duiveland, which is part of the province of Zeeland, by means of the Brouwersdam and the Grevelingendam, both well-known (water) sport hot spots.
The area has broad and clean sandy beaches with almost abandoned dune lands. There are vast polders and natural areas, which makes Goeree particularly suitable for cyclists and hikers. Here, you can enjoy hours of unprecedented quietness which only nature can provide. Go for a walk in the “Westduinen”, also called the “hobbelwei” (bumpy pasture) by the local population. Bumpy duneland without much vegetation, with dry peaks and wet valleys, small puddles and… military radio masts from the 1950s. These masts are an ironic sign of the history of the island. South of Ouddorp you will find natural area “de Hompelvoet”, a true paradise for nature lover with its many shorebirds and special types of plants that you will hardly find anywhere else in the country anymore.
Besides “Het Blaeuwe Huus”, there are many other historic buildings that are worth a visit. For example, the old dune farms, such as the Ridderstee and the Vissershoek. Or the 56 metres high lighthouse “Westhoofd” in the dunes near Groenedijk. The old fishing port is now a lovely marina. Also interesting, especially for the children, is the RTM tram museum. This old tram network is still operational between the Punt Van Goeree – Port Zélande – Scharendijke and on the Brouwersdam. Ouddorp also has a subtropical swimming pool and waterpark.
There is a lot to do and see in the nearby area. You can visit the Haringvliet Expo where you will learn more about the functioning of the Haringvliets locks. Or visit the sea mammal shelter “A Seal” in Stellendam or the “Rien Poortvliet Museum” in Korendijk. Or why not go on a tour of the historic town of Goedereede, or discover the past by bike along the so-called “Bunkerroute”?
Ouddorp has various facilities, including a large supermarket, a pharmacy, a bakery, a bike rental shop, and a great variety of shops, restaurants, and terraces. Young people can enjoy the local night life.
Also visit the Dutch towns Zierikzee, Veere and Middelburg or the seaside towns Renesse and Domburg. Or what about a day of shopping in world port Rotterdam!
