Did you know that Calpe has the smallest nature reserve in the whole of Spain? El Penyal d’Ifac: the 33-metre high limestone rock takes up an area of approximately 50,000 m2. The rock seems to rise from the Mediterranean Sea, but when climbing it, especially during warm summer days, it doesn’t seem to be so small after all.
The Costa Blanca is of course the place to be for sun, sea, and beach. The various coastal towns all have their own Spanish charm with vast (pebble) beaches, boulevards and terraces. Besides the famous rock, Calpe is also known for its fishing harbour with fish market, and its many fish restaurants. Not far from Calpe you will find popular seaside towns such as Altea and Moraira. More to the north is the town of Benissa with behind it the beautiful “Jalón Valley”.
Looking for a bit more excitement? Benidorm is less than half an hour away by car. The clean and safe beaches have been awarded many times. You can not only enjoy the sun here, but also (water) sports activities such as volleyball, beach football, or water skiing (towed by the cable ski installation of the water-ski school). Had enough of all the sand between your toes? The beforementioned “Jalón Valley” is perfect for walking, mountain biking and horse-riding. The area is known for its vast vineyards and each year around February, the valley turns soft pink because of the many almond trees.
There is plenty to do for the entire family such as theme parks and water parks in and around Benidorm. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy themselves in “Parque de Foietes” where you can play various ball sports, make use of the running track, or the Olympic size pool. Until the late hours, you and old can enjoy themselves in vibrant Benidorm.
There are also many sights to be seen just outside the town. Southwest of Calpe is seaside town Altea, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful towns in the entire region. In the old town centre you will find the magnificent church “Virgin del Consuelo”. The church square offers a fantastic view of the town with its small white houses. Further inland is “El Castell de Guadalest”, the castle of Guadalest, which offers not only a glimpse of the old days, but also an unprecedented and spectacular view.
Calpe has a large supermarket, a pharmacy, a bakery, a bike rental shop, and a large offer of shops, restaurants and terraces. The town also boasts many Dutch cafés and British pubs, which only emphasise the various nationalities here.
