The village of Holten in the province of Overijssel is situated on the border of the regions Twente and Salland and the province of Gelderland. The well-known site and highlight of the municipality Rijssen-Holten is of course the Holterberg, locatedright in the middle of the magnificent area of natural beauty of “National Park Sallandse Heuvelrug”. Do not be daunted or discouraged by the word “berg” (mountain) as the Holterberg is not exactly a mountain but more of an extensive area of heathland and (pine) forests. The top point of the area measures 59.5 metres above NAP (sea level). The area thanks its name to the village of Holten, which is located just at the southern side.
Holten has a nice and cosy village centre where lots of different activities are organised, especially during the summer season. Neighbouring town Rijssen presents itself as a shopping town with an extensive and varied (indoor) shopping centre and a large market on Monday morning. Both hikers and cyclists will enjoy this marvellous area. The magnificent forests and nature reserves have signposted routes provided by “Wandelnetwerk Twente” and “Fietsknooppuntennetwerk Salland”. For the adventurious people among us, there is also plenty to do. You could choose to go for a diversity of mountain bike trails but could also enjoy the area as a racing cyclist. You can also choose to make a trip in a hot-air balloon, which is very popular in this area.
If you’d like to experience a great diversity in landscapes in a short period of time, then you will definitely enjoy Sallant. The gorgeous flood plains and the unique IJssel River, compose the western border of Salland. The flood plains have a rich diversity in flora and fauna of which several areas have even been designated as nature reserves. In the eastern part, between Holten and Nijverdal, the hills of “National Park Sallandse Heuvelrug”, offering an entirely different landscape again. The small-scale bocage with the wonderful agricultural area amongst this, will almost immediately make you feel at home.
In and around Holten, there is plenty to do for the entire family, such as paying a visit to a dairy farm or cuddling with animals at the children’s farm. Do you prefer a more adventurous day out? Then you will probably enjoy a visit to “Avonturenpark Hellendoorn” with more than 30 rides, shows, water rides and Dreumesland (Toddler Land) for the very little ones. Would you rather enjoy- and romp around in the playground? The area has several great (indoor) playgrounds for both the young and the old.
There is also a great variety of museums, such as the doll museum in Holten, the toy museum in Deventer or a museum dedicated to agricultural miniatures in Frieswijk. Go back in time and discover the emergence of Salland in the IJsselvallei in Olst or go for a walk along the geological learning pathway in Nijverdal.
Holten has two large supermarkets, a pharmacy, bakery, bike rental shop and a great variety of shops, restaurants and terraces.
The Hanseatic towns Rijssen, Zwolle and Deventer are also worth paying a visit.
