“Westenschouwen, ’t zal u rouwen dat ge heeft geroofd mijn vrouwe, Westenschouwen zal vergaan, alleen de toren zal blijven staan.” - "Westerschouwen, you will grieve for taking my wife, Westenschouwen will be destroyed, only the tower will remain". According to this ancient saga about the old Westenschouwe, a merman is supposed to have pronounced this curse on Westenschouwen after a fisherman had taken his mermaid from the sea and taken her with him to the village. It might be coincidence, but after that, fell in decline. The tower, however, was demolished in 1845.
The village Westenschouwen, not to be confused with the nearby forest service “Westerschouwen”, is on the much southern point of the “Kop van Schouwen”. The harbour of the original fishing village silted in the 16th century, after which the fishermen left. Nowadays, the still quiet village has changed into a pleasant holiday destination for the entire family. The village is located near the forest service and the biggest forest of Zeeland: the “Domeinen”. There are several walking trails which lead you straight through herds of wild Shetland ponies and Scottish Highland cattle. You can also go horse-riding here or hop on a mountain bike and discover one of the most beautiful mountain bike trails of our country.
The 330-hectares area has several faces. The dense woods with its huge lakes, were created because of many years of water extraction. They evolve smoothly into the vast dune area. A very diverse dune landscape with barren valleys, sandbanks and dune heaths, with its many colourful and fragrant dune plants. What is special here is that in the entire area you can hear the waves breaking on the shore. The “Domeinen” are a Natural Heritage Site and is managed by Staatsbosbeheer (Forestry Commission). Most of the area is free accessible.
The area of Westenschouwen is perfect for long cycling tours through a landscape that we hardly see any more in the Netherlands. The many quiet country lanes take you along characteristic villages and offer you safe cycling routes.
The saga about the Vrouwe van Westenschouwen (Lady of Westenschouwen) can be heard when you enter the “Plompe Toren”. This tower is the only remaining relic of the village Koudekerke that was once part of Schouwen-Duiveland. But because of the many floods that afflicted our country, the village disappeared into the sea between the 15th and 17th century. Today, the “Plompe Toren” is linked to the saga of Westenschouwen.
Westenschouwen is only one kilometre away from the world-famous Delta Works with its impressive Oosterscheldekering, which you can see from the beaches. This storm surge carrier connects the island de Schouwen-Duiveland with the island Neeltje Jans, where you can visit the family water park of the same name. For people who like a bit of action, there’s the Grevelingenmeer (Lake Grevelingen) with its wide offer of (water) sports facilities.
Westenschouwen has a small seasonal supermarket and some fine restaurants. The village also has a real “climbing park” where young and old can enjoy themselves. A larger supermarket, pharmacy, bakery and bike rental shop, can be found in neighbouring Burgh-Haamstede.
Also worth a visit are the old Dutch towns Zierikzee, Veere and Middelburg or seaside resorts Renesse and Domburg.
