Region

Did you know that Nieuw-Haamstede was originally built as a holiday village? The neighbourhood was built early 20th century, when tourism became an increasingly important source of income for the village of Burgh-Haamstede. Originally, only wooden holiday cottages were built, but they were gradually replaced by stone houses.

Nieuw-Haamstede is part of the municipality Schouwen-Duiveland and is situated on the west side of the island. The area is also known as “Kop van Schouwen”.

The surrounding North Sea coast is characterised by the vast and broad sandy beaches, which are one of the biggest attractions for the many tourists that visit the island annually. From Nieuw-Haamstede the beach can be reached via five different paths through the dunes. This varied landscape with its barren valleys, drifting sands, and dune heaths, has many types of colourful and fragrant dune plants.

Several walking trails in, for example, the “Meeuwenduinen”, lead you through this beautiful landscape, with its herds of curious wild Shetland ponies and Scottish Highland cattle. In Westerschouwen this area flows over in the biggest forest of the province of Zeeland: the “Domeinen”. Along the same coastal route, you will also find one of the most spectacular mountain bike routes of the country.

The area around Nieuw-Haamstede is perfect for long cycling trips through a landscape of which there aren’t many anymore in the Netherlands. The many quiet country roads take you along characteristic villages and offer you very safe cycling paths.

Nieuw-Haamstede is characterised by several famous sites including one of the highest lighthouses in the Netherlands. The “Westerlichttoren” with its red and white stripes is no less than 58 metres above sea level. Did you know that this tower was depicted on a 250 guilders bank note until late 2001?

Besides this tower, there is another prominent tower just outside the village, the so-called “Plompe Toren”. This tower is the only remnant of the village Koudekerke which could once be found on Schouwen-Duiveland but disappeared into the sea because of the many floods that afflicted the country between the 15th and 17th century.

Then there is also the 13th century castle “Slot Haamstede” which can be found in neighbouring Burgh-Haamstede and now belongs to Natuurmonumenten. This old castle can only be visited with a guide.

Nieuw-Haamstede is not far from the world-famous Delta Works with its impressive Oosterscheldekering. This storm surge barrier connects the island Schouwen-Duiveland with, for example, the island Neeltje Jans, where you can visit the family water park of the same name. For energetic people, there is Lake Grevelingen with the Brouwersdam just north of the island. Here you can enjoy all sorts of water-based activities.

Nieuw-Haamstede has a small seasonal supermarket and some pretty good restaurants. The village has its own glider airfield where you can book an introduction flight for only a small fee. A large supermarket, pharmacy, bakery, and a bike hire shop can be found in neighbouring Burgh-Haamstede.

Also worth a visit are the old Dutch towns Zierikzee, Veere and Middelburg or the seaside towns Renesse and Domburg.

For more information about Nieuw-Haamstede and its surrounding area, we would like to refer you to the local tourist office.
