The village of Holten in the province of Overijssel, is situated on the border of the regions Twente and Salland and the province of Gelderland. The physical highlight of the municipality Rijssen-Holten is of course the Holterberg, right in the middle of the magnificent area of natural beauty of “National Park Sallandse Heuvelrug”. Do not be daunted by the word “berg” (mountain), because the Holterberg is not so much a mountain, but more of an extensive area of heath and (pine) forests. Highest point of the area is at 59.5 metres above NAP (sea level). The area has its name from the village of Holten, which is just south of it.

Holten has a nice pleasant village centre where especially during the summer all kinds of activities are organised. Neighbouring town Rijssen presents itself as a shopping town with an extensive and varied (indoor) shopping centre and a large market on Monday morning. Both hikers and cyclists will enjoy this area. The magnificent forests and nature reserves have signposted routes by “Wandelnetwerk Twente” and “Fietsknooppuntennetwerk Salland”. And for the adventurers among you there is also plenty to do. A mountain bike trail, for example, but the area is also perfect for racing cyclists. You can also take a trip in a hot-air balloon.

If you’d like to experience a great diversity in landscapes in a short period of time, then you will definitely enjoy Sallant. The gorgeous flood plains and the unique IJssel River, compose the western border of Salland. The flood plains have a rich diversity in flora and fauna and several areas have been designated as nature reserve. In the east it is the hills of “National Park Sallandse Heuvelrug”, between Holten and Nijverdal, which offer an entirely new landscape. The small-scale bocage in between, a wonderful agricultural area, will almost immediately make you feel at home.

There is plenty to do for the entire family in and around Holten, such as a visit to a dairy farm or cuddling with animals at the children’s farm. Prefer a more adventurous day out? Then visit “Avonturenpark Hellendoorn” with more than 30 rides, shows, a water ride, and for the very young ones there is Dreumesland (Toddler Land). Or what about romping around in the playground? The area has several great (indoor) playgrounds for both young and old.

There is also a great variety in museums, such as the doll museum in Holten, the toy museum in Deventer or a museum dedicated to agricultural miniatures in Frieswijk. Go back in time and discover the emergence of Salland in the IJsselvallei in Olst or go for a walk along the geological learning path in Nijverdal.

Holten has two large supermarkets, a pharmacy, bakery, bike rental shop, and a great variety of shops, restaurants and terraces.

Also worth a visit are the Hanseatic towns Rijssen, Zwolle and Deventer.

For more information about Rijssen-Holten and its surrounding area, we would like to refer you to the local tourist office.
