Did you know that Nieuw-Haamstede was originally built as a holiday village? The neighbourhood was built early 20th century, when tourism became an increasingly important source of income for the village of Burgh-Haamstede. Originally, only wooden holiday cottages were built, but they were gradually replaced by stone houses later on.
Nieuw-Haamstede is part of the municipality Schouwen-Duiveland and is situated on the west side of the island. The area is also known as “Kop van Schouwen”.
The surrounding North Sea coast is characterised by the vast and broad sandy beaches, forming one of the biggest attractions for the many tourists that visit the island annually. From Nieuw-Haamstede, the beach is only located at a walking distance and can be reached through five different dune paths. The dune paths take you through a varied and magnificent landscape consisting of barren valleys, sands drifts, and dune meadows and containing many types of colourful and fragrant dune plants and flowers.
The many walking trails in, for example, the “Meeuwenduinen”, lead you through this beautiful landscape, with its herds of curious wild Shetland ponies and Scottish Highland cattle. In Westerschouwen this area flows into the biggest forest of the province Zeeland called: the “Domeinen”. Along the same coastal route, you will also find one of the most spectacular mountain bike routes of our country.
The surroundings of Nieuw-Haamstede are perfectly suited for long cycling trips through a landscape that you will hardly find anywhere else in the country anymore. The many quiet country roads take you along characteristic villages and offer you various safe cycling paths.
Nieuw-Haamstede is characterised by several famous sites including one of the highest lighthouses in the Netherlands. The “Westerlichttoren”, characterised by its red and white stripes, has a lift height of no less than 58 metres above the sea level. Did you know that it was this tower that was displayed on a 250 guilders bank note until late 2001? Besides this tower, there is another prominent tower located just outside the village, called the “Plompe Toren”. This tower is the only remnant of the village Koudekerke which could once be found on Schouwen-Duiveland but disappeared into the sea because of the many floods that afflicted the country between the 15th and 17th century.
In addition, the famous 13th century castle named “Slot Haamstede” is located in the surroundings and owned by Natuurmonumenten. This old castle can only be visited with a guide.
Nieuw-Haamstede is located closely to the world-famous Delta Works and the impressive Oosterscheldekering. This storm surge barrier connects the island Schouwen-Duiveland with, among others, the island Neeltje Jans, where you can visit the well-known family water park ‘Deltapark Neeltje Jans’. For active and sporty people, Lake Grevelingen and the Brouwersdam located at the northside of the island are perfectly suited for enjoying all types of water-based activities.
Nieuw-Haamstede has a small seasonal supermarket and some pretty good restaurants. The village has its own glider airfield where you can already book an introduction flight against a small fee. A large supermarket, pharmacy, bakery, and a bike rental shop can be found in neighbouring Burgh-Haamstede.
The Old-Dutch towns Zierikzee, Veere and Middelburg or the seaside towns Renesse and Domburg are also worth paying a visit.
